To keep track of death duty due, tax collectors monitored bequests. Their records are kept in class IR26 of the Public Record Office and can be viewed on microfilm at the Family Record Centre. Finding the right film is rather time-consuming, but happily the folio numbers are given on the Estate Duty transcripts in the Frome Society for Local Studies indexes. These are needed to find the appropriate film in IR27, the index to IR26.
Notes from the records are listed below by IR26 film and folio reference, which is not always the same as date of probate.
The clerks’ summaries use the following abbreviations among others:
DB: Descendant of a brother
DS: Descendant of a sister
Str: Stranger to blood [i.e., not a blood relation]
Exor: Executor
Lr: Letter [sent to establish liability for duty; usually identified by a reference number, then /two digits indicating the year]
Testor: Testator:
I have also used my usual abbreviations.
Comments in (round brackets) are the tax clerks’; those in [square brackets] are mine.
