Tax inspectors monitored bequests to keep track of death duty liabilities. Their records are in class IR26 at the Public Record Office and can be viewed on microfilm at the Family Record Centre. Until 1812 they were recorded according to the court which gave probate, but thereafter in sequences for the whole of England and Wales, except for records for wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, which were kept separate. The data below is drawn from records for the Consistory Archidiaconal Court of Wells, PRO film reference IR26/290.
The tax clerks' notes are often abbreviated and quite hard to read and interpret; the FRC has a guidance sheet. I have made notes on entries for testators whose abode was Frome or its ancient hundred. I have not reproduced all the notes and figures in the records.
Comments in (round brackets) are by the tax clerks; those in [square brackets] are mine.
