"A very different iron industry was carried out in the Fussell works, although it had been started by Richard Hoddinott in Mells some fifty years before the Fussells, but the essential water supply was poor. Hoddinott found a better site at Nichol's Temmes, later Coombe Farm in Nunney. In 1717 the owner Thomas Horner granted it to Hoddinott and it became known as Hoddinott's Mill, next to what is now Nunney Court. In 1757 John Theobald recorded that a remarkable spring rose in Wanstrow and turned 'shearmills for grinding the Clothiers Shears and other edged tools, called Hoddinott's Mill, as being on Lands belonging to one of that name.' Mrs. Hoddinott was still living there in 1762.
The Fussells visited iron works in the north of England and started their edgetool works at Stoke Lane (Stoke St Michael) and later at Mells in 1744. Hoddinott died in 1760 and the Fussells then took over the mill, under the name of Isaac Fussell & Co."

A little church in the Dorset village of Swyre contains a placard commemorating the ancestry of a John Napier and the fact that he was descended from the Earls of Lennox. It is said that this John Napier migrated with his brother, Sir Alexander Napier and settled in Dorset in the late 15th century. We have no dates for him other than that which says that he was alive 1507 and married to Anne Russell. John (some records say James) supposedly supplied the local Abbey with fish.
John and Anne had 5 known children: 1]. Edward (d.1558) 2]. Tamsin 3]. John 4]. James (1572) 5]. Nicholas (~1510-1579)
Nicholas married Alice Court. They settled in Tintinhull, Somerset and founded the Napper family of Tintinhull.
7 generations on from Nicholas and Alice was Edward (1720-1752), curate of Tintinhull, who married Ann Catherine Tregonwell (1722-1753) in 1746. Of their 4 children, Thomas Tregonwell Napier (1748-1821) is the only about whom I have any substantial information. He settled in Westbury, Wiltshire where he married Deborah Peach (1752-1818) in 1771. They had 10 children. The eldest, Thomas (1772-1840), married Martha Goringe Troke (1775-1815) in 1796. Their daughter, Ann Catherine Napier (1812-1901) married Edward Brown in 1833. Edward & Ann Catherine were my wife's (Sally Ann Brown) 2xG-grandparents.
